Comic Conventions

 List of conventions:

  • Pictures
  • Speech bubbles

Use of colour:
  • Great visuals help reader grasp what’s going on narrative come alive 
  • Connotations of colours 
  • Help theme, mood, time of day, change scene, image planes and depth of field 




Caption boxes:
  • Are to tell narrative convey information cannot be communicated by the art or speech can be used in place of thought bubbles can be in first second or third person, either be assigned to be an independent narrator or one of the comics characters 
Onomatopoeia
  • Word sounds like a noise it is describing 
  • Capital letters bight colours 
  • Shows sound effects 
Typography:
  • Different text styles matter 
Features of comic strip:
Speech bubbles Action- usually round or square shapes with a tail pointing to characters mouth indicating that the character is speaking out loud
Broadcast bubbles - jagged tail letters are sometimes italicised indicate that the speaker is communicating through an electronic device
Whisper bubble - talking quieter and softer drawn dotted line or paler 
Thought bubble - cloud shape indicate character is thinking not talking out loud


















Use of focal points:
  • Dead centre- focus point
  • Lining eyes up with centre of frame 
  • Close up extreme close up wide shot 
  • Each panel should have focal point to draw readers eye allows us to connect to the story simple guidelines avoids confusion
  • Verticals panel - long and wide panel centre or slightly left or right 
  • Horizontal panel - tall skinny dead centre little above or bellow 


Use of backgrounds:
  • Help set scene of comic 
  • Background captivate audience
